The Plan *updated Feb 20 2007*
Andrea Macdonald & Maureen Chandler
Documentary Project 2007
Part 1: Our Artistic Vision and Project Plan
"In March, 2007, two young women take off on adventure in search of two things - freedom (however brief) from minimum wage jobs, and, the truth of why so many young people are denying financial and economic stability to pursue musical dreams. Andrea Macdonald is an original singer/songwriter embarking on her first cross-Canada solo tour, self-managed and self-promoted. Maureen Chandler is a spunky photographer/videographer anxious to get back into the film scene, and ready to film what promises to be an honest and insightful documentary on the state of the independant Canadian music scene."
From the introductory lines of the documentary, audiences will understand that the documentary film Maureen and I intend to create will be something new. A fusion of live performances, interviews, and "on the road" footage, it promises to be a gritty, no-holds-barred look at young artists and their drive to be something more. The tour will take us as far west as our money will take us. There will be no shortage of interview material, plenty of adventure to capture, and many embarrassing moments for comedic relief. The interviews will include musicians (and any other artists we come across) from different stages in their careers, starving artists to professionals, and what they need to do to supplement their performance pay. We plan to get on film (with two separate cameras) everything from the couches we sleep on, to our misadventures getting lost in strange cities. The end result will be a unique film where the two main characters are the makers of the movie, and the supporting roles are filled with the people we meet.
The documentary will serve a few purposes. First, upon completion, it will be an offering to the artistic community on Prince Edward Island, and we're striving to have it ready for showing for the end of summer 2007. Secondly, it will elevate our own artistic profiles so that we each can move on to bigger things in our chosen artistic fields. Thirdly, it will (hopefully) spark some talk in the community about the importance of artists and the excitement of following one's dreams.
The tour will run for an approximately six-week period, at the end of which we will be transferring the Hi-8 tapes to a digital format, and editing the footage to what will hopefully be a sixty-minute film. We will show the film firstly at an organized opening, accompanied by original live music and a talk on the making of the film. We will then move on to entering the film in other film festivals, hoping that the national sentiment captured in the movie will spark interest all over Canada.
